How Much Does a Conservatory Cost in the UK?

A traditional conservatory in the UK typically costs between £10,000 and £30,000. That range is wide because four things move the price more than anything else: size, roof type, glazing specification, and whether the roof opens. This guide explains each one, so you can tell which end of the range your project sits at.

Conservatory prices at a glance

What drives the cost

1. Size

Cost scales with roof area more than floor area, because the roof is the most engineered part of the structure. A 3-metre lean-to and a 6-metre gable conservatory are different projects, not bigger and smaller versions of the same one.

2. Roof type

Polycarbonate is the cheapest roof and the one most people later regret — it is hot in summer, cold in winter and loud in rain. Insulated glass costs more and performs far better. A retractable glass roof, where up to 75% of the roof opens, sits at the top of the range and effectively gives you a conservatory and a terrace in one.

3. Glazing specification

Roof glass is usually a sealed insulated unit with a solar-control coating. Upgrading the coating, adding laminated safety glass inside, or specifying larger panes all add cost and all improve comfort.

4. Shape and structure

A lean-to conservatory — a single slope from the house wall — is the most economical shape per square metre. Gable, P-shaped and L-shaped layouts add junctions, frame and labour. Long spans may also need steel carriers, which our systems do not require up to 5,000 mm projection.

5. Groundwork

A new base, dwarf walls or drainage changes can add significantly to a project. Reusing a sound existing base is one of the easiest ways to reduce cost.

Mix glass and insulated composite panels in the roof rather than glazing all of it.
